Memorial Day Weekend

Bear Lake Reserve is planning a great fun-filled celebration for Memorial Day weekend to kick off the summer season. Make plans to attend this event on May 28, 2011 to catch up with friends, neighbors, and family or make new friends. Hurricane Creek, a local band from Cashiers, NC, will provide live entertainment poolside at the Lake Club from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM. This Rock/Blues band has been entertaining locally and regionally for the past 14 years and we look forward to their debut at Bear Lake. Our chefs are planning special food and drink offerings, the Tiki Bar will be open, and poolside service available. Bring the family down to enjoy the pools, however, remember that pool towels will not be provided by Bear Lake Reserve this year.

The Golf Course is open and Dick Howard will be happy to make reservations for you at 828-293-5005. Pontoon boats are available for rental and Gail or Brittany will be happy to make reservations for you at 828-293-7414.

On-site photographer, Jerry Jaynes, took this photo of the Shadow of the Bear "emerging from winter hibernation" on Saturday, February 26, 2011. The shadow, caused by Whiteside Mountain, is visible between 5:15 - 5:45 pm the last half of February into March. It is again visible the last half of October into early November. Great job Jerry!

The Shadow Of The Bear

Jerry Jaynes, our on-site photographer, took this phenomenal photo of The Shadow of the Bear last October. He gave permission to use the photograph to Julie Spiro, Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, to promote Jackson County tourism. To Jerry's great surprise and delight, the picture was picked up by the Associated Press and is now widely published (Google jerry jaynes ap). The shadow has also been featured in the news on WLOS, Asheville, NC. Congratulations Jerry!

The shadow, caused by Whiteside Mountain, is visible between 5:30 - 6:00 PM the last half of October and into early November. It is again visible the last half of February into March. The 750 feet tall cliffs of Whiteside, are the highest sheer cliffs in the eastern United States. That should give you some idea of how large the bear is.

Oktoberfest

Our Oktoberfest will be held on October 16, 2010. This all day, fun event will begin with a kids fishing tournament at 10:00 AM at Mill Pond. Bring your own fishing pole or use one of ours. We'll supply the bait and give prizes for the largest and most fish caught.
The festivities will move to the Lake Club with plenty of fun for everyone. The Rye Holler Boys, a local country band, will provide the music beginning at 12:00. This band of 4 young men will keep you entertained until 7:00 PM. The Magic Tom show will be entertaining all ages with his balloon twisting and magic show from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM. Also, Style Street Studio of Sylva, NC will be on hand to take family portraits, for Christmas cards or to give as gifts, from 1:00 - 4:00 PM. They have packages starting at $59.95 for 3 sheets of 1-8x10, 2-5 x 7's, 4-4 x 5's, or a sheet of wallet size photos. Please call 828-293-7414 to arrange a sitting time. Backdrops can be the Lake, fire hearth, or Christmas theme fireplace in the Lake Club. Don't miss this great opportunity to preserve memories.
A hayride, pumpkin patch (where you can pick up your own pumpkin to take home), champagne cruise on Bear Lake, making candy and carmel apples, hot apple cider, apple bobbing, making pressed leaves, special Oktoberfest beer,and special food will round out the day.

Labor Day Weekend

The Staff of Bear Lake Reserve wishes to thank all the owners and guests who attended our Labor Day Celebration, September 4, 2010. The food was supurb and the band, Bayou Diesel was excellent. People joined in and played with the band, danced, and had a wonderful time. Anyone who was unable to attend certainly missed out on a great event.

Our next event, Oktoberfest, is planned for October 16, 2010. Plans for a children's fishing tournament, family portraits for Christmas cards, pumpkin patch, live music, great food, and other activities are being finalized for this event. Start making plans now to attend. Information will be posted here as it becomes available.

Guests need to come by the Lake Club for their temporary membership cards before using any of the facilities. The fee this year is $1.00 per family for the entire stay. This fee satisfies our requirements for the state of North Carolina. Plans are coming together for our spectacular Fourth of July Celebration here at Bear Lake Reserve. Beginning at 12:00 we will be serving a BBQ buffet at the Lake Club. The buffet will include pork BBQ, coleslaw, baked black beans, boiled fresh corn on the cob, rolls or buns, apple crisp with ice cream and a non-alcoholic beverage. The cost is $25.00 for adults, 12.50 for children 12 and under, and free for children under 3. Skate Rink Jukebox will be playing at the Lake Club.

Beginning at 6:30 and lasting until 9:30, the exciting Voltage Brothers band will be featured at the Amphitheatre behind the Greeters Cottage. The Burger Shack from Dillsboro will be on hand serving up their delicious hamburgers, hotdogs, lemonade, etc. and beer tents will be set up at locations at the Amphitheatre for refreshment. Of course, the Grand Finale will be the fireworks at the Amphitheatre after dark.

Jackson County Emergency Services and Law Enforcement personnel were invited to play free rounds of golf at the Bear Lake Golf Course on May 20 and 21. The turnout was exceptional and the weather cooperated. Lunch was also provided by Bear Lake Reserve and a fine time was had by all those who participated. Thanks again to all the Emergency and Law Enforcement personnel who provide such exceptional service to our area.

Beautiful native azaleas, also called flame azaleas and wild honeysuckle by the locals, dot the landscape this time of year all over Western North Carolina. Native azaleas can reach a height of 15 feet. Drive along Lake Forest Drive at Bear Lake Reserve and you will spot many of these stunning shrubs.

Rusty gets a facelift

Shrubs and vines have been trimmed away and "Rusty"can now be seen and photographed from Lake Forest Drive. To locate our old friend, come through the gates, pass the four cottages on the left, travel about 100 yards, and find him nestled in the woods. Poison Ivy stands guard over Rusty, so please just visit from the roadside. Remember the old adage "leaves of three, let them be" anytime you are in the woods. Stop by and say "Hi"on your next visit and if you want more information about the colorful history of Rusty, stop by the Lake Club or Greeters Cottage for an information sheet.

Pontoon Boat Rental

Mill Pond Pavillion changes

The building at Mill Pond Pavillion will now be locked when not in use. Homeowners or Guests wishing to use the inside facility will need to check out the key from the Greeter's Cottage. Homeowners and Guests will be responsible for any damages that occur within or the outside of the building during the use of the facilities along with being responsible for a fee in the event the key is lost or stolen.

Winter Wonderland at Bear Lake Reserve

Bear Lake Reserve got hit with another winter blast on March 2nd, making it the 4th big snow we have seen this winter. Snow accumulations reached the 11 inch mark at the Golf Course and around 9 inches at the Lake Club. Temperatures are expected to reach mid to high 50's this weekend, so hopefully, Spring is just around the corner!!

Our New Year has brought us some recording breaking sub-zero temperatures and we have gotten our 2nd major snow for the season.

**The Lake Club Amenities will be CLOSED for today (January 8, 2K10) due to inclement weather conditions** Please remember to contact the Greeters Cottage and your Property Management 72 hours prior to your arrival. Also, be sure to check-in with the Greeters Cottage upon arrival or the next following morning if you are arriving after-hours!

The Greeters Cottage will operate on a 8am to 8pm schedule today! Please never hesitate to contact the Greeters Cottage if you have questions in regards to your retreat in the mountains of Western North Carolina - where "memories are being created every day"! Telephone number for the Greeters Cottage is 828-293-3455.

With our record breaking weather conditions - your home may have consumed more energy (electricity or propane gas) than under normal conditions. We highly encourage you to contact your energy provider to make sure they are fulfulling their obligations for automatic refills. Several of the energy service providers are a full week behind schedule.

Due to inclement weather

the Lake Club and Lure Restaurant/Lounge

at Bear Lake

will be closed Sunday.

The Greeters Cottage will be staffed between 9a.m. and 8p.m. Roads within Bear Lake are in fair condition.

The Lake Club will not re-open on Sunday 12/20 for Brunch - due to weather conditions and freezing temperatures that are preventing the roads to be clear of ice/snow. The Lure Restaurant and Lounge will re-open on Saturday, December 26, 2009 at 11:30a.m.

If you are traveling the main street - Lake Forest Drive use extreme caution for the conditions are fair with areas that still remain covered with snow and ice! Many side streets remain covered with snow as well. It is extremely important if you are planning to be at Bear Lake that you communicate to the Greeters Cottage and Property Management in advance of your arrival for road and access conditions on your street....

If you do not know or need a copy of Bear Lake's "Inclement Weather Policy", please contact the Greeters Cottage at 828-293-3455 and Property Management at 828-293-7051 at least 72 hours in advance before your arrival so that we can adequately prepare and make adjustments in making the access as safe as possible considering weather conditions.

Bear Lake Reserve hosts the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Holiday Party

Bear Lake Reserve's, Mickey Luker, is seen loading up items for the Community Table. BLR partnered with the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and hosted an event at the Lake Club where Chamber members were asked to bring items for the Community Table and the Jackson County Department on Aging. "We collected more than 300 items for these organizations. We really appreciate Bear Lake's generosity and community spirit ", said Julie Spiro, Director of the Jackson County Chamber.

The Department of Aging will deliver several hundred packages to the elderly and area nursing homes. "Operation Christmas Box is really important to the elderly. If we didn't have good neighbors like Bear Lake and the Chamber, we wouldn't be able to give as much as we do to those less fortunate than ourselves. We appreciate their generosity", stated Helen Bryson, the Director of the Department on Aging.

Approximately 70 members of the Chamber of Commerce attended the Holiday Party at the Lake Club. Director Julie Spiro said members were impressed with the facility and the wonderful hospitality of the staff. "Everyone is really looking forward to our Business After Hours in October of 2010 at the Lake Club. Members were really appreciative of the opportunity to see the proper and I know they were please to hear that Bear Lake Reserve is very supportive of the community, employs local workers, and is making an investment in Jackson County", said Spiro.

High Winds and Cold Temperatures in Western North Carolina

With winter approaching here in Western North Carolina, it is important to remember that home maintenance is a must! Throughout the past couple of weeks we have experienced extremely cold temperatures and high winds. Put your mind at ease and rest easy this winter. Bear Lake Reserve wants you to take full advantage of our home Winter-Guard services. If you are not planning to use your home over the winter months, be sure to take the proper precautions to ensure the safety of your home. Winterizing is strongly encouraged and it will help protect against the weather conditions that could lead to frozen or ruptured water pipes.
