Bald Eagle Spotted at Bear Lake

While spending time at their Bear Lake home last week, Mr. and Mrs. Gaston Comas had the pleasure of spotting a bald eagle flying over the lake. Even though photographs do not do justice to this majestic bird, we are very thankful that Mr. Comas was able to capture the moment to share with us.

Bald eagles were officially declared an endangered species in 1967 in all areas of the United States south of the 40th parallel. In July of 1995, the US Fish and Wildlife Service upgraded the status of bald eagles in the lower 48 states to "threatened." On June 28, 2007 the Interior Department took the American bald eagle off the Endangered Species List. The bald eagle will still be protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. The Bald Eagle Protection Act prohibits the take, transport, sale, barter, trade, import and export, and possession of eagles, making it illegal for anyone to collect eagles and eagle parts, nests, or eggs without a permit. However, Native Americans are able to possess these emblems which are traditional in their culture.

From One End of the Scale to the Other

That’s the way it was last week at Bear Lake Reserve. Monday brought snow and very cold temperatures. By the weekend it was sunny and warm.

While most of you know what warm, sunny days look like at Bear Lake, few have experienced the snow. I invite you to watch the attached slideshow and you will see what it looked like for Front Desk Manager Tracy McFarland to arrive at the Greeter’s Cottage as the sun was rising. Be sure to look for the shot with the bright sun shining through the trees on the top of the mountain.

Phone Service is Sometimes Out at Our Greeter’s Cottage Due to Construction.

Our Greeter’s Cottage is currently under construction. Often the phone service is not working. If you try to reach our Front Desk Staff and there is no answer please call the Lake Club at (828) 293-7414. We will gladly relay your message.

There has been so much saw dust Front Desk Associate Michael Cole had to cover the computer terminal with plastic. But he did what had to be done.

The heating unit has been taken out so Front Desk Manager Tracy McFarland had to warm up by the fire. She's never been so thankful for that beautiful fireplace and plenty of firewood.

Mail still has to be posted even though there is limited counter space. Michael again got the job done and got in some deep knee binds at the same time.
