at Bear Lake
will be closed Sunday.

The Greeters Cottage will be staffed between 9a.m. and 8p.m. Roads within Bear Lake are in fair condition.

It is extremely important if you are planning to be at Bear Lake that you communicate to the Greeters Cottage and Property Management in advance of your arrival for road and access conditions on your street....

If you do not know or need a copy of Bear Lake's "Inclement Weather Policy", please contact the Greeters Cottage at 828-293-3455 and Property Management at 828-293-7051 at least 72 hours in advance before your arrival so that we can adequately prepare and make adjustments in making the access as safe as possible considering weather conditions.

Bear Lake Reserve hosts the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Holiday Party

Bear Lake Reserve's, Mickey Luker, is seen loading up items for the Community Table. BLR partnered with the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and hosted an event at the Lake Club where Chamber members were asked to bring items for the Community Table and the Jackson County Department on Aging. "We collected more than 300 items for these organizations. We really appreciate Bear Lake's generosity and community spirit ", said Julie Spiro, Director of the Jackson County Chamber.

The Department of Aging will deliver several hundred packages to the elderly and area nursing homes. "Operation Christmas Box is really important to the elderly. If we didn't have good neighbors like Bear Lake and the Chamber, we wouldn't be able to give as much as we do to those less fortunate than ourselves. We appreciate their generosity", stated Helen Bryson, the Director of the Department on Aging.

Approximately 70 members of the Chamber of Commerce attended the Holiday Party at the Lake Club. Director Julie Spiro said members were impressed with the facility and the wonderful hospitality of the staff. "Everyone is really looking forward to our Business After Hours in October of 2010 at the Lake Club. Members were really appreciative of the opportunity to see the proper and I know they were please to hear that Bear Lake Reserve is very supportive of the community, employs local workers, and is making an investment in Jackson County", said Spiro.

The Shadow of The Bear

Rhodes Big View Overlook on Hwy 64 at Whiteside Mountain
Between Cashiers and Highlands, NC

The shadow, cause by Whiteside Mountain, is visible between 5:30 - 6:00 PM the last half of October and into early November. It is again visible the last half of February into March. The 750 feet tall cliffs of Whiteside, are the highest shear cliffs in the eastern United States. That should give you some idea of how large the bear is.

This is a favorite capture of many visiting photographers to our area!

We are in the process of making the necessary repairs and are working diligently to return the fitness center to working order. Until all repairs have been made the gym, sauna, steam room, massage rooms and locker rooms are closed to the public. We hope to have all necessary repairs done within the upcoming weeks and return the fitness center to like new condition! We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause our owners during their fall and winter trips to Bear Lake Reserve.

Bear Lake Makes the Top 15 in Charleston Magazine!

The following was written for Charleston Magazine about Bear Lake Reserve:

"Come summer, Charlestonians typically migrate to cool WNC. Craving your own family-friendly mountain escape with plenty of activities but don’t know where to start? Bear Lake Reserve, a 2,100-acre development near Cashiers, rents out select properties that include access to Bear Lake’s beaches and watersports; the Lake Club with its restaurant, pools, and fitness club; miles of nature trails and a park complete with a teepee; and a nine-hole golf course high atop the ridge. Go to the club for dinner and meet friendly second-homers from Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina. Or dine in—they’ll even stock the fridge for you (for a surcharge, of course). During the day, keep the kids busy with Cubs and Adventure camps, canoe races, and crafts workshops. In the evening, the whole family can enjoy organized games, cookouts by the pool, and special summer concerts. Or head into town for shopping and dining: quaint Sylva—we loved the funky atmosphere and delicious brunch at Spring Street Café—is only a half-hour drive in one direction; Cashiers 40 minutes in the other." —Darcy Shankland, Charleston Magazine

Updates for the Week of June 8th

Please be advised that the Lounge and bathrooms at the Lake Club are being painted this week.

The pool is currently down about a foot to repair a crack in the tiles but it is still functional.

Work on the Greeter’s Cottage has resumed pending a few county inspections. It should be completed by the end of June.

Parkside Pavilion is complete with the exception of grass seeding.

Good News on Docks!

We are pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement with Duke Energy and Centex to resolve the outstanding issues associated with docks and dock permitting at Bear Lake. The good news is that all owners with docks associated with their property will be able to maintain those docks, and Terramesa will have sufficient docks for our future development plans.

There will be some additional paperwork required to finalize the transfer of Duke dock permits to the current property owners. Centex has agreed to take care of preparing and filing these transfer applications, and will cover the permit transfer fees as well. You will be receiving a letter from Centex in the next few weeks with the permit transfer application and other related documents, and the letter will provide instructions for completing and returning the application.

We understand that this has been a long process to reach what we believe is a satisfactory resolution, and we appreciate your patience during that time as we worked out the details.

Owners' Event 11:30 a.m. Saturday May 9th

Let’s Gather to Celebrate Motherhood

We'll Share Memories and Encouragements

Saturday, May 9th our mothers will be treated to mimosas and chair massages.

Come prepared to share a selection of poetry, prose or your favorite Mother’s Day Card...whatever speaks to your heart about the joys and challenges of being a mother or the blessing that your mother was for you.

During this time together Betsy Keller will speak to us about Energy Healing. She will teach a 5-minute routine that stimulates the immune system, enhances memory, increases vitality and brings more joy to a woman’s life.

Bring a picture of yourself as a young mother with your children. If you are STILL a young mother, bring a picture of you as a child with YOUR mother. We’ll do some guessing and award a prize.

Then you will have an opportunity to step outside that “mother” role and we’ll watch Mama Mia in the theater. We’ll sing and dance and have a great time. If you saved one of those outfits from your “Hippie” past (and can still wear it) bring it with you. If not, check the internet for costume rental. It will be great fun.

Communication from Terramesa

Memorandum April 2009

To the owners, friends and staff members of the Terramesa Resorts,

The recent economic meltdown has affected many resorts. The properties of the Terramesa MDR Resorts LP are not immune from these unprecedented market forces. We are increasing our communications with our investors during this time of volatility as we navigate some significant challenges. We are persevering and will continue to do so on behalf of our property owners, equity investors, lenders, professionals, staff, vendors and the communities we so enjoy building together.

We invested in the Centex resorts at good price points and we believe these properties will survive the downturn and emerge with solid performance relative to other similar resorts. This said, it is not new information to recognize that the market for second homes is lagging. In spite of the market, our sales teams are still seeing activity and interest in the properties. As positive as this news is, the sales progress to date has not kept pace with the original business plan. We believe this is a short-term challenge that we can overcome. Specifically, we are working together to renegotiate with our senior and mezzanine lenders to restructure the loans underpinning our investments.

While our conversations with all lenders involved are collaborative and constructive, it is possible that some parties will take steps involving various types of notices and will probably involve their legal counsel. These negotiations will likely happen behind the scenes, but some may surface publicly. This, while alarming, is a normal step in the process of restructuring as the lenders retrench their positions. The banks and mezzanine lender have all indicated a willingness to work with us to restructure and move forward together. We, along with our investors and lenders, are committed to overcoming these challenges.

In light of the economic environment and slow sales, we will be implementing land development reductions in budgets and staffing over the next two to three weeks. It is important to note that we will be continuing to serve our owners with hospitality services and amenities. While we will be evaluating the hospitality budgets, we don’t currently anticipate making significant changes.

Our resort communities have proven to be unique and continue to be desired by discerning resort property owners in spite of the current economic conditions. We expect our resorts to continue to operate with excellence and we’ll share more information as we move forward.

Sincerely,

Terramesa Resort Properties

4 Opportunities Each Year to Have Temporary Membership Fees Waived For Your Guests

On Saturday, April 4th owners met together at the Lake Club for the second time this year in an open forum. Temporary Membership fees were discussed and the policy was tweaked a bit to implement ideas presented.

It was decided that each year an owner will have 4 opportunities to have the $13 per day Temporary Membership fee waived for their extended family members or guests that have been invited to stay in their Bear Lake home. This does not apply to persons that are RENTING your home. The Temporary Membership Agreement will still need to be signed and processed 72 hours before arrival to satisfy the NC Alcohol and Beverage Control Commission. Your guests can pick up their Temporary Membership cards at the Lake Club.

Be sure to notify Membership Services Director Kathy Sluder at (828) 293-3864 that you would like to take advantage of this opportunity to avoid confusion concerning paying the fee when your guests arrive. It you need a copy of the Temporary Membership Agreement it can be obtained at the link above.
